Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte

Possibly not even invented in the neighbouring towns or within the German Black Forest itself the eponymous cake really only makes its appearance in the 20th century, with Josef Keller making a claim to have invented it in 1915 at Café Agner in Bad Godesberg about 500 km (310 mi) north of the Black Forest. The first written reference is by Weber's 1934 book "250 Konditorei-Spezialitäten und wie sie entstehen".

In any case the cake is surprisingly simple, although it does require some care. Essentially it is a layered chocolate sponge that has been impregnated with a generous amount of cherry licqour (Kirschwasser), with a cream and cherry filling, a cream topping, and a whipped cream and maraschino cherry topping, sprinkled with dark chocolate. The number of layers is subject to some competition.

Mine aren't particularly fancy to look at, but they taste nice. :)
